Are You Hiding? Will You Step Up and Be Uncomfortable?

Jan 18, 2025

I’ll admit it — I was comfortable. Comfortable in the back of the second violin section, with a music stand to myself. It was easy to hide. There was little pressure, minimal stress. Not that I wasn’t prepared or doing a great job; I was contributing to the orchestra and the performance. I had practiced my part well and knew it inside out, but I could relax and simply play.

That was rehearsal number one.

Then came rehearsal two. Someone was missing, and I was asked to fill in at the front stand. My first reaction? A silent panic. At the front, I would be under the conductor’s watchful eye, positioned next to the section leader, with the rest of the group following me. It was a moment — a moment that required me to step up.

I dug deep into my years of professional experience and knowledge. I took on a leadership role, and you know what? It was exhilarating.

From the front, you’re right in the thick of the action. You can hear every moving part clearly, and it’s easier to connect with the conductor, the other sections, and ultimately, the music. The position invites you to be a little more “edgy” and dynamic in your playing, pushing you to move beyond complacency.

So, I ask you: Are you willing to step it up in life?

Are you ready to be uncomfortable? To take a front-row seat and live on the edge? To dive into the action, or are you hiding and playing it safe?

What will you choose?
